The life of a word

La vie d’un mot

Take se débrouiller, to get by. It’s what you end up saying when people ask how your French is going: « je me débrouille ».

Prends se débrouiller. C’est ce que tu finis par répondre quand on te demande comment va ton français : « je me débrouille ».

  1. Capture You hear it Tu l’entends

Someone says it at the pharmacy and you have a few seconds. Record it, type it, or leave yourself a hint when you can’t spell it yet. No connection? It keeps what you caught and sends it later.

Quelqu’un le dit à la pharmacie et tu as quelques secondes. Enregistre-le, tape-le, ou laisse-toi un indice si tu ne sais pas encore l’écrire. Pas de réseau ? L’app garde tout et l’envoie plus tard.

  2. Drafts Brouillons It gets its context Il trouve son contexte

Languarium tidies up what you caught: spelling and accents, the dictionary form, a translation, the kind of word, a noun’s gender. Verbs come with their common uses and an example for each.

If a word could mean two things, like le tour and la tour, it asks you which one. You go over the changes and keep what’s right.

Languarium met au propre ce que tu as noté : orthographe et accents, forme du dictionnaire, traduction, nature du mot, genre des noms. Pour les verbes, tu as aussi leurs emplois courants, chacun avec un exemple.

Si un mot peut vouloir dire deux choses, comme le tour et la tour, il te demande lequel. Tu passes les changements en revue et tu gardes ce qui est juste.

  3. Practice Entraînement You practice it Tu t’entraînes

First what it means, from French and into French: you pick it from a few options, spell it, type it, or sometimes just hear it. Once that sticks, its grammar comes next: un or une for a noun, the right agreement for an adjective, and for a verb its conjugation, avoir or être, and its preposition.

D’abord ce qu’il veut dire, du français vers l’anglais et dans l’autre sens : tu le choisis parmi quelques options, tu l’écris lettre par lettre ou au clavier, ou parfois tu l’entends seulement. Une fois le sens acquis, tu travailles sa grammaire : un ou une pour un nom, le bon accord pour un adjectif, et pour un verbe, sa conjugaison, son auxiliaire (avoir ou être) et sa préposition.

A drill: je me ___ débrouillé, with suis and ai to choose from.
  4. Your French Ton français You keep it Tu le gardes

Get a word right a few times in a row, from French to English and back, grammar included, and it’s yours. Weeks later it may come back once, just to check.

The words you know are all in one A to Z list, and the few that are almost there are named at the top.

Réussis un mot plusieurs fois de suite, du français vers l’anglais et dans l’autre sens, grammaire comprise, et il est à toi. Des semaines plus tard, il peut revenir une fois, juste pour vérifier.

Les mots que tu connais sont tous dans une liste de A à Z, et ceux qui y sont presque sont nommés en haut.

The Practice screen: your word counts, and the words that are almost yours.

Why I made it

Pourquoi je l’ai faite

I moved to France and put a lot of hours into French. Every day I heard something I didn’t know: a word at the bakery, something a friend said at the office.

I wrote it all down in notes apps, spreadsheets, a paper notebook. None of it felt right. Writing things down was a chore, and I almost never went back to practice. Flashcard apps felt heavy for this, and none of them were built around French.

So I made the notebook I wanted, just for French.
